Postpartum Night Doula, San Francisco

Real things I hear at 3 AM

“We brought her home 3 days ago. I haven't slept more than 90 minutes.”
M
MargoI hear this a lot in the first week. Tonight I come over, you hand me the baby, and you go to sleep. That's it. We'll figure the rest out tomorrow.
“I'm cluster-feeding every hour. My maternity leave ends Monday and I can't see straight.”
M
MargoCluster-feeding is brutal, and it's normal. I'm a certified lactation educator — I'll handle the feeds overnight and we'll protect your supply while you actually rest before Monday.
“My birth doula was for the birth. Now what?”
M
MargoThat's exactly the question. Birth doulas are for labor. I'm the person who shows up after — for the weeks of nights that follow. Different job, different training.
“I have postpartum anxiety. I can't think straight without sleep.”
M
MargoSleep deprivation makes everything worse — especially anxiety. The single best thing I can do for you right now is take the nights so your body and mind can start to recover.
“Pediatrician said establish a schedule. No one taught us how.”
M
MargoNewborns don't do strict schedules yet — they do rhythms. I'll be with your baby overnight, learning their cues, and I'll show you what I'm seeing. It starts to click within a week or two.
“I want to bond. But I'm running on fumes.”
M
MargoYou bond better when you're rested. I take the hard overnight hours so you have the energy to actually be present during the day. That's how this works.

Margo Yudanova, San Francisco postpartum night doula

I don't just drop in for a visit. I'm in your home overnight, weeks at a time.

While you recover. While you bond. While you figure out who you are now that you're a parent.

Quiet nursery at night during a postpartum night doula shift in a San Francisco home

I know what 3 AM looks like with a 6-day-old. The cluster feed that won't end. The crying you don't yet know how to fix. You're learning your baby. One night at a time.

And you don't have to do it alone.

The first weeks don't stand still. Some nights are quiet. Others are spent cluster feeding, soothing, answering questions, or simply helping you get the sleep you need. As your baby changes, so do the nights. You'll have the chance to recover, learn, and ask the questions that naturally come up as you get to know your baby.

The schedule

How nights work.

10 PM – 6 AM

Each shift

8-hour overnight in your home. I arrive after you've put baby down for the evening, take over all night-time care, and leave after morning feed. Alternative window: 9:30 PM – 5:30 AM.

3 – 5

Nights per week

Typical schedule. We pick the nights that match your needs — often Sunday–Thursday so you have weekends to bond, or every-other-night to stretch the engagement.

4 – 8

Weeks of support

Average engagement is 6–8 weeks postpartum. Some families book 4 weeks for the hardest stretch; some go all 12 weeks through the leap to a more predictable rhythm.

2 – 8 PM

Daytime virtual

Text/video support during the day after each night shift. Questions answered same-day, by the same person who handled your night.

How to start

Four steps to real rest.

01

Check my availability

Reach out — phone, email, or form. My schedule fills up months in advance, especially for due dates around major holidays. Earlier is better. I respond within 24 hours, M–F.

02

Free 15-min introduction

Quick call. We talk through your due date, what kind of support you're imagining, any specific situation (twins, history of postpartum mood disorder, breastfeeding goals). No commitment.

03

Sign agreement + deposit

If we're going forward, I send a written agreement covering hours, weeks, schedule, cancellation policy, payment terms. A deposit secures the dates on my calendar.

04

Ongoing communication until birth

I check in during the weeks leading up to your due date. If your baby comes early, I'll rearrange my schedule whenever possible. If I'm already committed to another family, I'll do my best to help you explore other support options.

What I do overnight

Three areas. Every night.

Breastfeeding, newborn sleep, and practical support—working together through the first weeks.

Sleep

Newborn sleep foundations

0–3 month babies

0–3 month babies don't sleep-train—they learn rhythms. I help you recognize your baby's sleep cues, build healthy sleep foundations, and understand what's age-appropriate during the newborn months. As your baby's sleep changes around four months, you'll already have the knowledge and routines that make the next stage much easier.

Daytime

Daytime virtual support

2 PM – 8 PM

I stay reachable by text or a quick call the day after each night shift, from 2 PM to 8 PM. New questions often come up once the day gets going. Instead of searching for answers online, you'll have direct access to the person who already knows you and your baby.

Pricing

Custom by engagement.

Pricing depends on your schedule and support needs.

“Margo is a Force of Nature.”

She was the backup postpartum doula after our twins came early but was so wonderful we stuck with her for the remainder. She walked into a chaotic situation and created order. She is direct, kind, good humored, inventive and unflappable.
Cordelia E. Yelp
★★★★★

“Like a newborn fairy godmother.”

Margo helped guide us through nursing and bathing, setting up a daytime schedule, swaddling, diaper rashes, cradle cap, stuffy noses, and so much more. She's passionate about her work and it shows in the results she gets with babies (and parents!)

“Is it possible to give 10 stars?”

Margo is the consummate professional: she's reliable, thoughtful, smart, and adaptable. Definitely a bonus that Margo has a lactation specialty and is a sleep trainer… she's the ultimate ‘swiss army knife’ of doulas!

“Magic Margo.”

She arrived the next day and for three months ensured the baby was expertly cared for at night so that we, the parents, could get some very much needed sleep. She was a wealth of knowledge about baby care, especially baby sleep and lactation.

“Easily the best investment my husband and I have ever made.”

She went above and beyond in all aspects of the postpartum period. Her lactation expertise helped me immensely with my breastfeeding journey. When our time together was (sadly) over at 6 weeks, our baby was sleeping 5 hour stretches at night.

“The single most incredible thing I've done for myself and our family.”

I would recommend her 1000%. She has transformed the haze of the early postpartum experience into such a beautiful and special time. Because of her my mental and physical recovery was so much easier and I warded off any postpartum depression.

“She sleep trained my baby AND me.”

Margo was pivotal in maintaining my mental health postpartum. She helped us set the foundations for good sleep hygiene and routine. Margo is also wildly intuitive and great at problem solving.

“The only reason we made a smooth transition to parenthood.”

Margo is worth the money, and she will do everything possible to help you transition smoothly to parenthood, allowing you to get much needed sleep while also teaching you how to do… well, everything, really. She also picks up on your baby's specific needs.

“If you are considering hiring her — DO IT.”

Don't hesitate. It is hands down the best money we have ever spent. I can't imagine how we would have managed without Margo's help. She is a baby whisperer.

Frequently asked questions.

Book in advance during pregnancy if possible — typical engagements are 4–12 weeks and dates fill up quickly. Last-minute requests after birth are accepted when my schedule allows. Common scenario: book in third trimester for the first 6–8 weeks home from hospital.

Babies don't always arrive on schedule, and I understand that. I do my best to accommodate early arrivals whenever possible. If I'm already committed to another family, I'll do my best to help you find trusted backup support through my professional network.

Yes. As a Certified Lactation Educator (CLE), I provide hands-on breastfeeding help during night shifts — latch coaching, position support, supply troubleshooting, pumping schedules.

I arrive in the evening, settle in, and take over all night-time newborn care. Feeding (breast, bottle, or pumping coordination), diaper changes, soothing, sleep cue tracking. You sleep. In the morning we briefly debrief what happened overnight and any patterns I'm seeing.

A night doula supports the entire family — not just the baby. Along with overnight newborn care, a night doula helps parents understand feeding, sleep, newborn behavior, recovery, and the many questions that come with the first weeks at home.

My approach combines expert overnight newborn care with evidence-based guidance. I don't just care for your baby while you sleep — I help you understand your baby, build confidence, and establish routines that continue long after my overnight visits have ended.

The terms are often used interchangeably, and there isn't one universal definition. In general, a night doula supports both the baby and the parents, while a baby nurse or newborn care specialist is usually hired to care for the baby overnight.

My role goes beyond overnight care. Yes, I'll feed, soothe, settle, and care for your baby while you rest. But I'll also help you understand your baby's cues, answer the questions that come up at 2 a.m., support breastfeeding or bottle feeding, and help you build confidence as a new parent.

Schedules are signed in advance with a deposit. If your baby is sick or you need to reschedule, we work it out — I don't charge for nights not worked. Full cancellation policy is in the agreement we sign before the engagement starts.

Yes. About 1 in 5 of my night doula families is twins or higher-order multiples. Different protocol — coordinated feeds, separate cribs, supply support if mom is exclusively breastfeeding. Rate is adjusted for scope. Tell me your situation.

When you're ready.

Send a short note — your baby's age or due date, what your nights look like. I read every message myself. No intake form, no scheduler. Just a conversation.
